Translating Images in the Lara iOS/Android App
How image translation works on iOS and Android
The Lara iOS and Android apps include a built-in image translation feature that uses a high-fidelity full-image rebuild approach. Instead of extracting and overlaying translated text on the original image, Lara reconstructs the entire image with the translated content — delivering significantly higher visual accuracy and more natural text rendering.
This makes it particularly well suited for photos, signs, menus, product labels, and any image captured or stored on a mobile device.
How to translate an image
- Open the Lara app and go to Image translation
- Select a photo from your library, take a new one with your camera (make sure you give the app permission to use your camera), or share an image directly from the gallery
- Select the source and target languages
- Tap Translate
Lara will return the image fully reconstructed with the translated content.
Supported image formats
AVIF, BMP, GIF, HEIC, HEIF, PNG, JPG, JPEG, TIF, TIFF, WEBP
The same format uploaded is returned as output (for example, JPG → JPG, PNG → PNG).
How image translation affects usage
In-app image translation uses 25,000 characters per image, drawn from your shared character pool. This reflects the more complex processing involved in a full-image rebuild.

Image translation quality
Results may be affected by image resolution and clarity, text size and contrast, and image dimensions. For best results, use clear, high-resolution images with well-defined text.
