What to Do When Your VAT ID Is Not Recognized as Valid

Step-by-Step Guide to Troubleshoot and Update an Unrecognized VAT ID

  1. Check the VAT ID you entered for any typos or formatting errors. VAT IDs typically begin with your country’s code (e.g., "FR" for France) followed by the appropriate sequence of numbers.
  2. If you’re confident the VAT ID is entered correctly, visit the European Commission’s VAT Information Exchange System (VIES) to check whether your VAT ID is officially recognized as valid.
  3. If your VAT ID is still not recognized as valid, consult the VIES FAQs for guidance. These FAQs provide solutions to common issues, such as incorrect formats, country-specific requirements, and steps to follow if the system does not recognize your VAT ID.
  4. If your VAT ID still isn’t recognized, contact your local tax authority to confirm its validity and resolve any issues.
  5. Once confirmed, update your VAT ID in the Billing Information section of your account and save your changes. The system will use the new details for future invoices.

Important Note: If your VAT ID cannot be validated, taxes such as VAT may be automatically applied to your invoices in compliance with tax regulations.
