Using the Lara Translate Browser Extension
The Lara Browser Extension lets you translate web content directly while browsing. You can translate entire web pages, selected text, and specific content in Gmail, Google Docs, and Google Slides — without leaving your browser.
Installing and Accessing the Extension
The Lara Browser Extension is available on the Chrome Web Store. To get started:
- Go to the Lara Translate extension page on the Chrome Web Store and click Add to Chrome
- Click the puzzle icon in the Chrome toolbar and pin Lara Translate by clicking the pin icon next to it
Once pinned, the Lara icon appears in your browser toolbar.
Sign In to Lara
You need a Lara account to use the extension.
- Click the pinned Lara icon to open the side panel
- Click Sign in to Lara to open the login popup
- Sign in with your Google account, Apple account, or email and password
- If you don't have an account, click Create account to sign up
After signing in, the extension opens on the right side of the browser, ready to use.
Set Your Preferred Language
The first time you sign in, the extension asks you to choose your preferred language. This language is used as the default target for all translations throughout the extension. You can change it later in Settings > General.
Page Translator: Translate Entire Web Pages
The Page Translator lets you translate the full content of the page you are currently visiting. A floating translation widget appears at the top of compatible web pages.
The Translation Widget
When you visit a web page, a floating translation bar appears at the top. It includes:
- Source language selector (auto-detected by default)
- Target language selector (defaults to your preferred language)
- Translation style selector (Faithful, Fluid, Creative, Formal, or Informal)
- Translate button
- Auto-translate controls
- Minimize button to collapse the widget into a small pill
- Power-off button to hide the widget
The widget is draggable — grab the handle on the left to reposition it.
How to Translate a Page
- Open the web page you want to translate
- The translation widget appears at the top of the page
- Choose the source language or keep Detect for automatic detection
- Select the target language and optionally a translation style
- Click Translate
Once complete, the page content is replaced with the translated text. To view the original, click Show Original on the widget.
Translation Styles
- Faithful — Preserves the exact meaning of the original text
- Fluid — Produces a natural-sounding translation
- Creative — Adapts the text more freely for the target audience
- Formal — Uses formal register and tone
- Informal — Uses informal, conversational language
Auto-Translate
You can set the extension to translate pages automatically by language (all pages in a specific language) or by website (all pages from a specific domain). Click the auto-translate icon on the widget to configure these options, or go to Settings > Page Translator.
Minimize or Hide the Widget
- Minimize: click the minimize button to collapse the widget into a small pill at the edge of the screen. Click the pill to restore it.
- Power off: click the power button to open a menu with options to stop the widget on this page, on this website, for this source language, or globally.
Restoring the Widget
If the widget is hidden, restore it by right-clicking the page and selecting Lara Translate > Show Page Translator Widget, or by opening the side panel and toggling the Web Page Translator back on.
Page Translation Limitations
Page translation may not be available on all websites, because some websites use technical or security configurations that prevent browser extensions from accessing page content, or because complex dynamic websites may block reliable page translation. In these cases, you can still translate content using the Text Translator or the Quick Translator in the side panel.
Text Translator: Translate Selected Text
The Text Translator lets you translate specific portions of text from any web page by selecting them.
Using the Selection Popup
- Select (highlight) any text on a web page
- A small Translate icon appears near the selection
- Click it to open the translation popup
The popup includes:
- Source and target language selectors
- Translation style selector
- Translated text area
- Text-to-Speech button (for supported languages)
- Copy button — copy the translated text to clipboard
- Replace button (for editable fields only) — replace the selected text with the translation
The popup is draggable and resizable.
Quick Translation Icon
By default, a floating Translate icon appears whenever you select text. You can disable it in Settings > Selected Text Translator > Show text translation icon. When disabled, you can still translate selected text via right-click: Lara Translate > Translate Selection.
Quick Translator (Side Panel)
The side panel includes a Quick Translator for translating any text without leaving your current page. It supports Translation Memories and Glossaries configured in your extension settings.
- Click the Lara icon in the toolbar to open the side panel
- Type or paste text in the left editor
- Select source and target languages and a translation style
- The translation appears in the right editor
You can swap languages, copy the translated text, or listen to it via Text-to-Speech.
Site Integrations
Lara includes native integrations for Gmail, Google Docs, and Google Slides, providing a tailored translation experience within each platform. For full details, see:
Extension Settings
Click the Lara icon in the toolbar, then click the gear icon to open Settings. Settings are organized into four tabs:
- General: set your preferred language; view and toggle your Glossaries and Translation Memories (synced from your Lara account)
- Page Translator: configure disabled sites, hidden source languages, auto-translate by language, and auto-translate by website
- Selected Text Translator: toggle the floating translation icon and set a default translation style
- Integrations: enable or disable Gmail, Google Docs, and Google Slides integrations
Context Menu
Right-click on any page to access Lara Translate options:
- Translate to [Language] — translate the entire page to your preferred language
- Translate Selection — translate the currently selected text
- Translate Current Slide Into [Language] — (Google Slides only) translate the current slide
- Show Page Translator Widget — restore the widget if hidden
- Open/Close Sidepanel — toggle the Lara side panel
Incognito Mode
When Incognito Mode is enabled, your translations are not stored. This is useful when translating sensitive content. Your team owner may enforce Incognito Mode for all translations on the team account; when enforced, you cannot disable it.
Billing and Usage
Translations performed through the Lara Browser Extension are billed using the Text Translation quota associated with your Lara account.
